Since he became the head of Twitter in October, users have witnessed numerous changes on the platform. The latest one revolves around the beloved blue bird logo, which held special significance for many users. Now, the logo has been replaced with a more bold and masculine design, completely transforming its appearance. What is the Threads app?

Threads, built by Instagram’s parent company, Meta, is a social media platform where Instagram users with an iPhone or Android device can share and interact with each other’s text posts. When you first start using Threads, your account is linked to Instagram, so you can keep your username. Threads is meant to compete with Twitter. Meta made this strong move to try and get people who use Twitter to start using Threads instead. The hope is that these users will be tempted to switch over to Threads. On the first day, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta (formerly known as Facebook), proudly announced that Threads had gained 30 million new users.

How does Threads work?

Getting started with Threads is easy. You need to simply use your Instagram account credentials to log in and your Instagram username and verification will seamlessly transfer over. Next, you can enter your bio and include important links such as your website or links to other social media accounts. If you prefer a convenient option, you can automatically fill in these details from your Instagram account by selecting “Import from Instagram”. This action also syncs your profile picture from your Instagram profile.

You cannot change your username on Threads itself, as it pulls from your Instagram account. To change your username on Threads, you will have to change your Instagram username. If you are under 16 years old (or under 18 in certain countries), the app will automatically set your profile to private to ensure your safety and privacy.

In Threads, you can share posts on both Instagram and Threads itself. You can post 500 characters in one post on the app. These posts can include links, photos and videos that can be up to five minutes long.

You have the freedom to follow the same accounts as you do on Instagram, while also discovering new individuals who share similar interests. Additionally, you can unfollow, block, restrict or report other profiles. If you block an account on Instagram, it will also be automatically blocked on Threads.

It is now available to download in over 100 countries including the UK, but not yet in the EU because of regulatory concerns, particularly around the EU’s Digital Markets Act. But the company says it is looking into launching in the EU.

What can Bitclout tell us about the importance of personal branding in 2021

What is Bitclout?

Bitclout is a cryptocurrency platform designed to operate as a social media network that looks and feels like Twitter. On the platform every profile gets its own coin that anybody can buy and sell; these are known as “creator coins”.

Bitclout is designed to let people bet on the popularity of public figures by buying tokens associated with people’s profiles. Users can buy a creator’s coin and watch its value change based on the creator’s popularity on the site. Bitclout says its creator coins are “the first tool we have as a society to trade ‘social clout’ as an asset.”

As a disclaimer this blog post is not financial advice, and we are not telling you whether to use bitclout or any cryptocurrency. In this blog post we will look at the importance of personal branding using Bitclout as a new potentially successful social media platform.

Like Bitcoin, Bitclout is a fully open-source project and there is no company behind it – it’s just “coins and code”.

“Celebrity Stock Market”

A BitClout user’s coin value is based on an abundance of factors that make up their online reputation. If a celebrity does something to generate ‘buzz’ for themselves, then more people would invest in their BitClout coin, causing their value to rise. Conversely, if a celebrity’s public relations take a downturn, we could expect their value to fall as users do not want to invest in their reputation.

In order to invest in a celebrity, users must first purchase Bitcoin to trade for BitClout’s own cryptocurrency. To date, nearly $190 million has been locked up through purchases of creator coins, which proves there is already a huge demand for markets based entirely on public personas.

How can influencers profit from BitClout?

BitClout allows fans to support influencers financially – this enables influencers to have more control over their content. On standard social media platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, influencers with large followings are generally funded by sponsorships and paid promotions from third-party brands, which they market to followers.

BitClout influencers profit very differently – they receive direct payment when followers invest in their coin, with very little transaction fees to worry about. There are also no guidelines/terms of service to govern BitClout content, meaning prominent personalities can create the content they enjoy and their followers want.

Creators are allowed to keep a certain percentage of the BitClout that are invested into their coin, as a “founder reward.” For example, if someone sets their founder reward percentage to 10% and then another user bought 100 BitClout of their coin, then 10 BitClout would go directly to the creator’s wallet.

Who currently uses BitClout?

At the time of writing, many social media stars have signed themselves up to BitClout – most notably the brother duo of Jake and Logan Paul, who each boast tens of millions of followers over various platforms.

There are also ‘placeholder’ accounts created to represent A-List celebrities, such as Elon Musk, Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian. These accounts have been created by anonymous BitClout users and have not yet been formally verified by the stars themselves. Coins purchased on these accounts will become accessible to their namesakes once they tweet their BitClout public key.

There has been controversy surrounding the placeholder accounts, as users can manipulate the market value of celebrity names which possess no attachment to their real-world counterparts. However, this has not stopped their market value from skyrocketing – Justin Biebers’s BitClout coin currently trades for $7500 a coin, whilst Elon Musk’s coin tops the rankings at over $54000.

Seeing at BitClout is in its very infancy, it may take time for more high-profile celebrities to recognise it as a useful platform to help ascend their personal branding.

Freedom to the Influencer

Compared to existing social media platforms, BitClout prides itself on being more ‘free’ with regards to transactions and opportunities to earn. All activities, including text posts (dubbed ‘clouts’), price changes and coin ownerships are public for the users to observe on the network. On each creator’s page it displays the amount of their coins currently on the market, their BitClout price, etc. This gives the platform great potential to develop a ‘purer’ relationship between viewers and creators, without the interference of a centralised institution or third parties.

Due to this, users have the independence that the incumbents didn’t allow them before and access to a public feed system with equal footing for everyone. There remains no party that can curate content everyone sees or support the more financially robust, but rather, this is only in the hands of the users themselves.

How could BitClout affect personal branding?

If nothing else, BitClout has reinforced the idea of monetizing influencers, celebrities, and individual brands based on their social media ‘clout’. In the past decade we have seen Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram generate unprecedented amounts of viral power, and now users can fully capitalize on this with BitClout.

In addition to this, the lack of ‘central’ authority governing BitClout gives users far more freedom and opportunity to customise their personal branding. Because BitClout is built on an open data structure, users can publish BitClout content on any web application. We are living in a global crisis; social distancing is now the new norm but as web designers we can still work remotely from home. Those of us that were used to working in a shared office space are now adjusting to the work from home lifestyle. A big change in environment can be difficult but with the right approach you can make working from home a success for you and your clients.

Stick to a set schedule and create a routine

One of the benefits of working from home is being able to work whenever you want, but that doesn’t mean you should. Having a set work schedule will help boost productivity and keep personal time separate. You can create your work schedule based on the times of day you are most productive or if you are used to the 9 to 5 continue to do that. Start your work day routine as if you were heading to the office. Getting dressed for the day will signal to your brain it’s time to start the day and work.

Especially when you’re working from home with kids or other family members or flat mates around, it’s crucial to set boundaries and for everyone to respect them.

Let everyone around you know what times you are working and ask them to not be disturbed. If possible, work in a designated office area in your home with the door closed.

A key component of successfully working at home is having a dedicated workspace. Our minds associate different environments with different things and if they get muddled it can mess with sleep during the night and productivity during the day.

So, designate a specific place for work and only work. Find a space next to a window, if you can. Sunlight can help with productivity and lighten the mood.

Whatever you do, try not to work from bed or the sofa. Those spaces should be reserved for relaxation only.

Give clients access and communicate with your team

Communication is the backbone of remote teams and working with clients. When we’re not used to communicating remotely, it’s easy for misunderstandings to happen. This is why it is important to communicate clearly.

Zoom is the latest tool everyone is using for group video call’s but there are other applications like the good old Skype. A phone or video call with your team or clients can be quicker and more efficient to get your ideas and queries across.

With your whole team working from different locations it is imperative that you have somewhere to store and organise all the files you will be using. Dropbox is a cloud storage service which means you can copy your files to the cloud and access them later, even if you’re using a different device.

Lastly just communicating through emails is not very efficient, I suggest your team and clients use a platform like Slack for group conversations. Communication and collaboration in one place can help you get more work done and keep everyone in the loop.

Be disciplined and stay focused

Distraction is the killer of productivity. But when working from home you’re facing a whole lot of new distractions that need to be avoided.

The boundaries and tips for working from home mentioned earlier will help minimise distractions. But it comes down to discipline to avoid letting yourself get distracted. You can turn off push notifications on your phone while you work, wear noise cancelling headphones or even just remove yourself from the distraction completely.

A messy work space can also be distracting, so keep your surroundings clutter-free.

Stay Active

Sitting all day is bad for you, so take breaks every 90 minutes to renew your energy levels. Even if you just get up to walk to the kitchen to make yourself a hot drink, grab a healthy snack, stretch or do some light exercise. These small breaks standing up away from your computer screen will help you get through the work day.

Most importantly when you have your lunch break, don’t eat at your work space. Take some time on your break to get away from the computer. Use your breaks to eat, get some fresh air and do something for your mental well-being.

Adjusting to working from home as a web designer can be hard but if you take on board these tips and try using some of the tools mentioned it can be done successfully. Once you get used to being home and working you can begin to see the benefits out way the negatives.

The feminist movement has a long and complex history. Ever since the late 19thcentury, women have fought for equality, starting with the suffragette movement and getting the right to vote, leading all the way to today’s Pussyhat Project. Throughout the decades, feminists have advertised their movement using design, trying to raise awareness and to express their mission of making the world a better place. But how does feminism in design affect the movement – and who benefits from it?

If you walk around London these days, it seems as if feminism has become an inherent part of advertising. Brands are trying to position themselves as official advocates for equality and make use of the current popularity of the feminist lifestyle, suddenly aiming to support women in all kinds of different ways. This so called femvertising is becoming a more and more popular tool for brands to promote themselves with, and consequently, feminism in design has gained more relevance than ever.

What does design do?

Before talking about feminism in design, we should talk about design in itself. There are many different types of design – graphic design, web design, product design, to name a few – and they all serve the same two main objectives: meeting the client or the target group’s needs and wants, and constant improvement. Design aims to meet and exceed expectations, always being a better version of what was before. It is constantly around and has a huge influence on how we see our world.

Design can, however, also be discriminatory, especially when it comes to gender. Certain colours, fonts and imagery are associated with male or female, and not conforming to this standard is perceived as being bold or even brave. Imagine a brand like Lynx would use a pink, twirly font in their marketing campaign for a new deodorant scent for men – it would take the essence of their whole campaign, which is men making women go crazy by smelling very masculine, away. A whole campaign would collapse because of the font and colour chosen to promote the product. The image of the brand would shift from being cool and young to being inexplicable and probably making the consumer feel a bit uneasy.

Of course, gender stereotypical design has improved over the past decades. The rules are not as traditional as they used to be, and brands are becoming braver in their approach. And this is where feminism comes in.

Feminism as a lifestyle

Feminism hasn’t had a purely political core for a long time. The term feminism has shifted from describing an important equal rights movement lead by mainly women to serving as a brand people choose to define their lifestyle. Suddenly everyone wears T-shirts with GIRL POWER printed on them, people state in their Instagram bio that they are a feminist and post pictures of their stretchmarks, explaining how beautiful they are to them. Not only is this missing the point of feminism, but it is also throwing a shadow over the actual movement genuinely concerned activists are trying to advance.

Designers have jumped onto this trend and started feeding the demand for feminist lifestyle content. There are fonts that integrate certain feminine features or objects, posters that show feminist symbols or fashion items that state allegedly feminist slogans. (The future is not only female!). There is stationery and jewellery, candles and water bottles that state some sort of feminist message, and people are proudly carrying those items around as a way to visualise certain character traits.

Arguably, not every feminist design is made to serve as a part of this pop cultural trend. Most feminist institutions make use of some sort of design, if only for a logo or a web site. Posters are made for marches, leaflets and stickers to spread awareness and gain attention. Even some artists, such as Barbara Kruger, for example, have used feminism in their art to raise awareness of patriarchal oppression or the feminist movement, montaging statements with a feminist message onto black and white photographs or prints. In her case, everyone benefitted from this: the statements on her collages were direct and unapologetic, underlining the importance of change and gender equality and are still used today to raise awareness, but she also gained fame as an artist by using feminism. The difference to this appropriation of the political issue and the The Future Is Female shirt is, however, that the purpose of the design in Kruger’s case seems to serve women collectively, whereas the shirt only serves the individual and their own presentation.

Feminism in Design – can it be both?

However, there is, as so often, an area between these two extremes. When Donald Trump called Hilary Clinton a “nasty woman” on American national television during the third presidential debate, it didn’t take long until “nasty woman” merch was available to buy everywhere on the internet. Shirts, necklaces, hats, key rings – all with differently designed variations of the same two words printed onto them. Undoubtedly, the sellers of these items are likely to have had their financial profit in mind rather than actually wanting to point out the problem with misogynist statements about powerful women, but nevertheless, it helped this small but profound statement to get the relevance it deserves. It was not just quickly mentioned by the newspapers and then forgotten – design helped it to be recognised as what it is: a typical reaction of people who feel uncomfortable with women who take control, trying to bully them into backing off. Design made this example of female oppression timeless and helped reminding the public on how easily these things are said about women, and consequently, underlining the urgency for change.

It is therefore safe to say that design can bring advantages to feminism and other political movements, if it aims to achieve the right goal. There is a fine line between raising awareness, being supportive and empowering women, and co-opting the message in order to create demand for your brand. Looking at the purpose of each individual design that claims to be feminist is therefore a good practice for everyone interested in supporting the movement – after all, most designs do raise a little bit more awareness to the issue, even if the brand and the individual consumer are the ones that benefit the most.

Striking video content and fabulous photography

The world is full of outrageously brilliant photography and video content these days. Not only are top of the range DSLR cameras absolutely cheap as chips at the moment, but if you are the owner of a smartphone, then chances are, you are also a pretty awesome smartphone photographer. We are a society obsessed with selfies, Instapics, filters etc. and our collective eye for detail is growing more and more fixated on the perfect pic. Whether it be for your Facebook profile pic, Snapchat story or a Pinterest pin.

So, if your website is lacking perfection when it comes to imagery, it’s probably time to shut up shop and move back to the 20th Century. Back in simpler times, pixellated pics were considered arty. The fear of falling victim to ‘false internet advertising’ was less real and more humorous. Like when you ordered cowboy boots for your autumn winter wardrobe and they arrived in a matchbox instead of a shoebox and looked just perfect on your nephew’s Woody doll.

So, striking video content and photography is not only about aesthetically pleasing imagery. It’s about accuracy and being true to the services and products you provide. This is vital for building a trusting customer base and providing a service that people would be happy to recommend. Being transparent online is an extremely useful business tactic. If consumers know what to expect from you, then the likelihood of them being let down or misunderstanding what’s on offer is dramatically reduced.

Amazing content not only does wonders for your customer base but also helps significantly with marketing your business. This can be through unrelated ‘sharing’ of your content or reusing your imagery. Either way, you are getting YOUR brand out there, potentially into a different demographic of potential customers.

Back to the 20th Century in website deign

The hamburger and other delicious icons

The hamburger menu icon is one of those simple symbols, which will go down in history as one of the most effective. Consisting of three straight horizontal lines stacked one on top of the other – the top and bottom lines being the bun and the middle line being the burger – the hamburger takes up little space and is not restricted by language and can be rendered on all web-enabled devices.

The hamburger really is an icon of our generation, something that has gone from ‘what is the deal with those three lines in the corner of that website?’ ‘Where the heck is the menu?’ to ‘……….’ That’s right, silence. Because everyone now, knows exactly what the function of that simple little icon is. We don’t know how these sorts of transitions take place, from something being completely new and ineffectual, to them being a full-on part of our digital lives. From social media icons, the search magnifying glass or the microphone icon, all of these tiny images are now part of a digital language that we all recognise. Despite them all being, for the most part, is less than a decade old. Awesome, effective icons are set to stay and this brings us straight onto our next point about intuitive design…

Your website design should always consider the user/customer as the most important person in the whole process. If the interface for your website is not user-focused, then is it unlikely that your customer base will be able to interact with your online business without a hiccup, if at all. A glitchy website that doesn’t do what it says on the tin, is the most annoying thing ever. Equally annoying is a super stylish website that is completely dysfunctional and totally style over substance.

As a website user, you want to feel that your web browsing experience has been developed with you in mind. A slick, easy experience that allows you to do whatever you need in about 4 clicks. Maximum.

Intuitive design means that the customer doesn’t have to do too much leg work to get what they want. YOU as the business owner are supplying THEM a service. By making their experience easier, you are doing yourselves justice.

2018 is the year when slow load page times are just unacceptable. Websites that require flash or any other random plugin to work are completely obsolete. As well as low-quality design, these simply will not be tolerated. So there you have it, it’s the intuitive way or the high way!

The card design has been around for many moons and is set to be here for quite some time yet. With its simple, yet effective layout and structure, card design offers a clean, off-beat style of web design that is very ‘Skandi’. Which is very on-trend. Paired with simple sans serif typography and muted colour palettes, card design can take your website from tired to contemporary. Without having to reshape or redesign the whole concept of your site.

Think cool mood boards, retro colours and clean typography. Card design is a minimalist’s dream and set to be a favourite amongst web designers and developers in 2018. Not only does the simplistic design of a card designed website make it easily navigable, but it also allows your content the space to shine.

Long-form content

For years, businesses have refined their content into snappy, short form-focused nuggets of information that are easily digestible. But the times are a-changin’!

Well, not completely, but this trend of making content so short and focused that it could essentially fit into a tweet. This is something businesses are now reconsidering when they design content for their websites. We think the long-form text approach is, naively, something they do because they anticipate it will increase organic web traffic. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes the best way to approach content is simply quality rather than quantity.
